WINTER SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARD WINNERS

   The Greater Omaha Sports Committee is proud to announce the 2010/2011 Winter Scholar Athlete Award Winners sponsored by Regal Awards. Eleven High School Seniors, Six boys, Five girls, representing nine different area High Schools were honored for not only their contributions on the field but their academic accomplishments in the class room. Students of this caliber are “The Cream of the Crop” says Jo Dusatko (Greater Omaha Sports Committee sub-committee chair), “it goes with out saying these kids are why we love to coach and teach. It was a special afternoon as Andy Kendeigh (Channel 7 - Sports Director) was able to put their accomplishments into perspective. The Greater Omaha Sports Committee will honor 11 winter sports scholar-athletes at a luncheon April 12 at the Omaha Marriott.

• Boys basketball: Galen Gullie, Bryan; Blake Headley, Millard South.

• Girls basketball: Brittney Lynch, Elkhorn; Alexis Akin-Otiko, Bellevue West; Jordan Gillenwater, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

• Boys swimming: Colin Krysl, Papillion-La Vista; Jay Nelson Elkhorn.

• Girls swimming: Karen Illg, Millard West; Kyra Lindholm, Omaha Marian.

• Wrestling: Hunter Winkler, Millard West; Sheldon Garcia, Millard South.

     For more than fifteen years the Greater Omaha Sports Committee has honored the Outstanding Scholar Athlete of that particular Sport and for the Year in the Omaha Metro Area. These students are judged not only for their accomplishments on the field but for their scholastic achievements in the class room. This Winter’s recipients were Outstanding and many participated in other Varsity Sports. Because, these recipients cannot be nominated in another Sport they will not be eligible to win in another Sport. However, many of them will be entered into the 2010/2011 Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete awarded in June to One Boy and Girl.
